Industry Insight Manager
Olivia Elliot has worked across East Africa in government and in industry, and at every stage of the supply chain. At the TDU she supports prospective investors – both manufacturers and global sourcing companies – to explore setting up manufacturing facilities and sourcing offices in Tanzania, with the aim of creating an ethical “cotton to clothing” value chain, sustainable job creation and increased value-added exports. The country has many attractions including sustainably produced rain-fed and hand-picked cotton, a large economically-mobile workforce, duty-free access to the US and Europe, and a politically and socially stable operating environment. Olivia also advises policy-makers on the impact of government laws, for example, the recent East Africa Community (EAC) decision to phase out second hand clothing across the five EAC markets.
Previously, she worked on the Tanzania Cotton Sector Development Programme which trains farmers, both conventional and organic, in methods of conservation agriculture. In addition, Olivia worked with ginneries and global input supply companies to create direct and mutually beneficial contracts with Tanzania’s 500,000 cotton farmers, boosting access to productivity-enhancing inputs and extension services.
Olivia began her career with Monitor Group, a strategy consultancy, and gained experience in Uganda’s agricultural sector with TechnoServe. She holds a First Class degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford and an MBA from I.E. Business School in Madrid.
